NRR is located in Frontier County in southwest Nebraska which highly rated for its upland game hunting. The turkey population is high, especially along creeks. Deer are abundant, and many with trophy racks have been found near NRR. Pheasant population is dependent upon Spring weather, but seems to be rising as several farmers in the area are beginning to stock them and chuckers. Small game birds, such as quail and doves, are increasing in numbers, too. We support Quail Forever, which has an active chapter in our area, which is willing to assist us with habitat development. During the Spring and Fall, ducks and geese grace the skies. Of course, rabbits, squirrels and coyotes are easy to see or hear depending upon the time of day or night. Medicine Creek State Recreation Area is a spring fed reservoir with 29 miles of shoreline and 8500 acres of land and water open to the public. (Link http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/parks/guides/parksearch/showpark.asp?Area_No=113). The county also includes Red Willow State Recreational Reservoir. Nature’s Rural Retreat is located close to many acres of Conservation Reserve (CRP) land that have recently been planted to prairie grasses which are really helping with bird habitat. Out best and closest is GreatNebraskaHunting which is right next door and offers extended hunting on some 7000 acres. Please view the links for more information.
